A guiding thought for my work and my life comes from Marcel Proust, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” As a photographer, technical skills are vital but secondary to the capacity to see.
In this retreat, through a variety of activities and the tools of photography, we will hone our capacity to see the world around us. Time will also include sharing photographic skills and techniques in both capturing and processing. There will be both private and group time to practice, learn, and share.
One of the ways that I have learned to see the world in a new way is through my photographic mandalas. They have become a form of meditation. During the retreat, I will share the process for creating your own photographic mandalas.
Location: New Skete Monastery, Cambridge, NY (www.newskete.org) When I visited the monastery, I didn’t want to leave! It is such a place of serenity and beauty! New Skete is about equidistant between Saratoga, NY and Bennington, VT in the peaceful Taconic Mountains and is listed in the book 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die by Patricia Schultz. (And the nuns of New Skete make amazing cheesecake!)
Accommodations: Emmaus House is set amongst acres of secluded meditation gardens, about a ½ mile down the private mountain from the main monastery. The house has 6 private suites, each with a bedroom, sitting area and bathroom. There is a fantastic, light filled common space in the house where we will gather. Basic kitchen facilities are available for light snacks. Meals will be provided by the monks. (I shared a delightful noon meal and lively conversation with these warm, funny, and interesting men.)
Limited to 5 photographers.

Participants, at minimum, are comfortable with a DSLR camera, understand exposure and how to use camera settings other than Program or Automatic.
